Trade Waste is part of the Business Services group. The unit is responsible for making sure that the industrial liquid waste discharged into Auckland's wastewater reticulation system for treatment at the Mangere Wastewater Treatment Plant meets the required standards.
Trade waste can contain a number of substances which could be detrimental to health and safety of wastewater personnel, the sewerage system, treatment plant processes or the environment. Watercare manages this by issuing discharge consents authorising the volume, pre-treatment guidelines, concentration and the mass limit of controlled substances.
Trade waste customers are charged directly for this liquid waste disposal service. The combination of economic incentives and consents which limit the discharge of potentially harmful substances ensure the wastewater system can operate effectively and helps ensure a better environmental outcome for Auckland.
Watercare monitors trade waste discharges into the wastewater system to manage risk and ensure consent compliance. Legal remedies are available through the Trade Wastes Bylaw.
Watercare's trade waste unit is proud to have an ISO 9000 certificated quality system.
